MYCORRHIZAL DEPENDENCY OF TWO ENDEMIC TREES OF WESTERN GHATS

K. Vijayakumar and T.K. Abraham

Abstract

Frequently observed Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizosphere of Gluta travancorica and Myristica malabarica were inoculated on the seedlings of these trees. Glomus fasciculatum was found to be the rapidly infecting fungus. Enhancement in growth parameters were noticed with inoculated plants and a positive correlation was observed between root colonization and biomass production. Specific root length and Root/ shoot ratio decreased on AM inoculation. M. malaba rico showed higher mycorrhizal dependency compared to G. travancorica. Addition of phosphorus did not influence the dry matter yield and mycorrhizal dependency of the trees.
