VERMICOMPOSTING OF PRESSMUD BOOSTS NUTRIENT QUALITY OF COMPOST

R. Ramalingam* and L.S. Ranganathan

Abstract

Analysis of the vermicast formed by Eudrilus eugeniae fed on pressmud for 30 days revealed N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, CRP, Zn, Fe and Mn to be more than the control and organic matter, organic carbon, S, Cu, C/N ratio and C / P ratio to be reduced than the control. The significant factor in the vermicomposting is quicker mineralisation and accelerated reduction of C : N ratio than normal composting.Vermicomposted pressmud can be used as bio-organic fertilizer.
