IMPORTANCE OF WETLANDS IN NORTHERN SUBURB OF SECUNDERABAD, ANDHRA PRADESH

Bhargavi Srinivasulu and C. Srinivasulu

Abstract

Recording diversity and composition of bird species, we assessed the importance of wetlands in northern suburb of Secunderabad. Species composition and diversity were recorded to be highest at tanks that scored high ratings of threat index values. The present study indicates that the lesser-known and small wetlands act as an important winter refuge to waterfowl and wetland dependent avifauna. Developmental pressures, fishing, encroachment, alteration of habitat and cultural eutrophication were the major threats for these tanks.
