A POPULATION SURVEY AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE HERD SIZE AND STRUCTURE OF THE BLACKBUCK ANTILOPE CERVICAPRA LINN, IN THE MAHAVEER HARINA VANASTHALI, HYDERABAD, ANDHRA PRADESH

Abstract

The population survey and observation on the social behaviour of a semi-captive population of the Blackbuck Antilope cervicapra Linn., was carried out during the months of January to April 1995, at MahaYeer Harina Vanasthali (MHV), Hyderabad. An estimated 229 Blackbucks were seen in the 80 ha expanse of the phase I of MHV, accounting for 2.75 animals per hectare. It was observed that the Blackbucks were more frequently seen in the herd size range of 6-10 individuals in the mixed herd composition with a mean herd size of 9.85. The sex ratio
