Adnan Abubakr, Neelofar, Nuzhat and M.R.D. Kundangar

Abstract

Ten underground water sources commonly used for potable purposes in down town Srinagar Kashmir are assessed for their water quality. The ground waters are alkaline and depict high conductivity, total alkalinity, calcium, magnesium iron, nitrate-nitrogen, total phosphorus and COD values because of contamination of aquifiers due to seepage of nutrient rich domestic sewage. Relationship among water quality parameters reveals a significant positive correlation between pH and water temperature, calcium, magnesium and iron. Electric conductivity shows a positive correlation with total hardness. Sulphate, nitrate-nitrogen while negative correlation with iron, chloride, ortho-phosphate and ammonical nitrogen.
