EFFECT OF MARBLE SLURRY ON GERMINATION AND SEEDLING GROWTH OF VIGNA RADIATA

A. K. Pandey, K.C. Sharma and S. Dutta

Abstract

Different concentration of marble slurry leachate (0- 1 00%), have shown toxic and inhibitory effects on seed germination, seedling establishment, seedling survival, speed of germination, length of root and shoot, and on secondary growth. Slurry water is characterized by high salinity, hardness, containing higher concentration of certain elements such as CaCO3, Na+ and Ca+2 etc. This slurry water may exert sticking effect on growth and development of plants by altering the interaction with the present environment. This indicates that the marble slurry to be more potent growth inhibitor.
