EFFECT OF UNTREATED DISTILLERY EFFLUENT ON GROWTH AND BIO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERS OF TRIGONELLA FOENUM

M. Vasanthy, C. Tharnarai Selvi and R. Sathya

Abstract

The impact of various concentration (1%, 5% 10%, 25%) of distillery effluent on growth of "Trigonella foenum" and the Physico-chemical properties of soil was studied under laboratory conditions. Percentage of seed germination, root length, shoot length, root/shoot ratio, biomass and Chlorophyll content have been affected with increase in effluent concentration (59%, 10%, 25%). The soil was found to be slightly alkaline. The treated soil was rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and total organic matter. The inhibitory effect at higher concentration may he due to excess of soluble salts and too high level of BOD and COD. However the results also show that the dilution of effluent brings down the toxic effect indicating the fact that suitably diluted effluent could be used as a fertilizer for the crops.
