CROWDING AND SUBJECTIVE WELL BEING

Sunita and Promila Batra

Abstract

The present experiment was a multi group design using three levels of perceived household crowding (PHC) to study the effect of PHC on subjective well being (SWB). 1000 Ss were selected randomly and given PHC inventory to screen out 240 Ss, 80 each belonging to low, moderate, and high level of PHC.These Ss were given SUBI and the obtained scores analysed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan's range test The results indicated that SWB was poor not only for high levels but also for moderate PHC levels. Out of eleven components of SWB only three components Le. general well-being positive-affect, confidence in coping, and transcendence were negatiVely affected,The possible causes of this negative effect have also been discussed.
