Abstract

River basins are potential units for planning water resources development leading to creation of irrigation and power infrastructure. Study of environmental parameters of river basins provides a database for a comprehensive look to take decisions on execution of developmental projects.Tlawng river basin flowing in Mizoram which has a river length of I 02 km within Mizoram is one such typical river basin.Water quality analysed by taking sample from different sources representing surface water and ground water revealed that total hardness varied from 1 2.636 mg/lit to 92.664 mg/lit, pH ranged from 6.4 to 7.8 and maximum concentration of fluoride was 0.09 mg/lit. Soil erodibility analysed by Bouycous and Middleton method indicated that soil is highly erodible. Survey on health related parameters revealed high incidences of malaria followed by gastro-entreaties among the rural inhabitants. This is attributed mainly to plentiful breeding grounds for the disease causing vectors. Population density in the basin is 22 persons/S(1km substantiates the river basin which is low and any developmental project will not have adverse affect on human population.
