Abstract
Effect of different sub-lethal concentrations (2.0, 5.0, 8.0 x 10-3 ppm) of mercury on the activities of protein and carbohydrate metobolism and their recovery following withdrawal of treatments were studied in L. roloa fingerlings. A significant alterations in protein and carbohydrate metabolisms observed in liver tissue of L. rohita fingerlings when exposed to metal suggests that increasing the energy supply to cope with the heavy metal stress. After 5 days of mercury exposure fingerlings were transferred to mercury free water and recovery response were observed for 25 more days. However, on the 25th day the metabolities reached their near normal levels indicating metabolization and slow elimination of mercury and resynthesis ofthe metabolites indicating the reduced rate of glycogenolysis and glycolysis and increased rate of proteolysis.
