Abstract

The effect of lead acetate at a sublethal concentration of 10 ug/L, for 30 days and 60 days, was studied on haematological parameters and some biochemical changes in the liver of a fresh water fish Cirrhina mrigala. Lead acetate produced significant haematological and biochemical abnormalities. Haemoglobin content, RBC and WBC counts, PCV, MCV, MCH were markedly reduced. Total protein, glycogen, RNA, DNA and the activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases were decreased in the liver after the exposure of lead acetate. The adverse effect of lead acetate was higher in long term exposure when compared to the short term exposure.
