HYDROLYSIS OF FEATHERS FROM DIFFERENT POULTRY STRAINS BY TWO SPECIES OF ASPERGILLLIS

KAVITHA, N. S. HILDA, A. AND ESWARI

Abstract

To assess the hydrolysis of feathers from different poultry strains such as meyer, forsgate, turkey and Japanese quails, two species of highly potent saprophytic fungi namely Aspergillus flavus and A. terreus were used. With the help of ecofriendly technology the culture filtrate was analyzed for the release of catabolic products such as protein and keratinase production along with the concomitant increase of pH. Per cent utilization of poultry feathers during the process of degradation was also envisaged to suggest the possibility of waste feather removal by hydrolysis in the ambient environment. Among the two fungi used, A. flavus was more effective than A. terreus for poultry feather degradation.
