Abstract
In the present study the physicochemical characteristics of sugar mill effluent, discharged from Tummapala sugar factory, Anakapalli (Andhra Pradesh), and their impact on local fish, Channa punctatus were observed. High values of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BUD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reveal the presence of high concentration of biodegradable organic matter in the effluent. The harmful effects of effluent was also studied with respect to survival of fish. The consequential demand on organic reserves is analyzed and established.
