EFFECT OF DEAD BODY CREMATION ON THE BREATHING RATE OF FISH OF SARYU RIVER AT FAIZABAD AND AYODHAYA

SIDDHARTHA SHUKLA AND G.C. PANDEY

Abstract

The present study was aimed at assessing the values of different physico-chemical parameters of two ghats (Guptar-Faizabad, Cremation ghat—Ayodhya) of Saryu river during June, 1996 to Jan, 1997 and their impact on fish (Labeo rohita) breathing rate. The analysis showed that the discharge of full burnt ashes and half burnt organic flesh of dead bodies at cremation ghat, Ayodhya enhanced the pollution load of river and thereby enhanced the breathing rate of fish (89 beats/min.). Whereas at other sampling site there was discharge of soaps and detergents only and so the breathing rate of fish was normal (68 beats/min.).
