Abstract

Idols of Goddess Durga are submersed in a surface water body especially in river in the last of durga Pooja festival. This activity promotes pollution in that water body. The present study deals with environmental impact assessment of idol immersion activities in river Ken at Panna-Chhatarpur districts, M.P. through physico-chemical monitoring of water quality. The monitoring of river Ken water was carried out on pre, during and post idol Durga immersion days. Water samples in sufficient amount were collected from different points of river Ken and analysis for various physico-chemical parameters viz. temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, pH, TDS, TSS, total solid, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, sulphate, chloride, DO, BOD and COD. The results of the study indicated that most of the physico-chemical water quality parameters were found beyond than that of their permissible limit at during and post immersion days.
