EVALUATION OF WATER QUALITY OF THE FEED AND PRODUCED WATER OF ABUTRABA DESALINATION PLANT, LIBYA

Aiman M. Bobakar and Intisar M. Alakili

Abstract

This study is aimed at determining certain physical and chemical water parameters to evaluate water quality of feed and produced water of Abutraba desalination plant. Water samples were collected monthly from the feed source of sea water and produced water at Al khawabya reservoir, Tocra and Tolmeitha distribution systems and Almarj reservoir for a period of three months extended from June to August, 2011. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and tested. The results show that all water quality parameters are in compliance with the permissible limits for drinking water as recommended by World Health Organization and Libyan Water Quality Standard exception are levels of nitrate, phosphate, total iron and manganese and turbidity of the water samples collected from Almarj reservoir. Those exceeded the limits is possibly due to release of these element from sediments and wastes around the Almarj reservoir into water column. More chemical and biological investigations are strongly recommended to insure the healthy and quality of the water received from Almarj reservoir.
