EVALUATION OF ETHANOL PRODUCTION POTENTIAL OF ZYMOMONAS MOBILIS STRAINS

P.S. PANESAW, S.S. MARWAHA AND R.RAP

Abstract

In the present investigation, four Zymontonas mobilis strains were screened for their fermentation potential to produce ethanol using glucose medium supplemented with different concentrations of ethanol. Further, the ethanol and temperature tolerance of these isolates was also tested to find the efficient strain. Out of these strains, Z. mobilis MTCC 90 produced maximum amount of ethanol (3.81%, v/v) while utilizing 98.0% (w/ v) glucose at 30,C at pH 6.0 with 10% (v/v) inoculum level, whereas at higher temperatures its ethanol production potential decreased. Moreover this strain showed maximum ethanol tolerance of 6% (v/v) at 30,C whereas the higher ethanol concentrations (8-10%,v/v) have been found inhibitory to this isolate
