LITTER PRODUCTION AND NUTRIENT RETURN IN AN AGE SERIES OF CASUARINA EQUSETIFOLIA IN EAST COAST OF INDIA

Abstract

Litter production was estimated at the age series of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 years old Casuarina equsetifolia plantation at Perungalore, Pudukottai District, Tamil Nadu, India. Litter fall was estimated during the years of 1994 to 1995 by installing litter traps in the plantations. Litter fall was collected at monthly intervals. Result revealed that the litter fall was recorded round the year. Maximum litter fall was occurred in the month of May and June in the all the age groups. The highest litter production of 6.409 t/ha/yr at the age of 4 years and 6.000 t/ha/yr in 5 years old plantation followed by 7 and 6 years old 5.853 and 4.873 t/ha/yr and the minimum litter production 4.323 t/ha/yr was obtained at the age of 3 years old plantation. Nutrient concentration (%) and nutrient return through litter in the order of Ca> N> K> Mg> P in all the age groups.
