Abstract

The wild species of the Gossypium (cotton) are rich source of the novel traits such as fiber quality, cytoplasmic male sterility, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses etc. Genetic diversity among the twelve wild species of the Gossypium was studied based on RAPD analysis. High level of polymorphism was observed in DNA banding pattern suggesting hight genetic variability among the wild species of Gossypium. Proximity matrix was calculated and using hierarchical cluster analysis generated dendrogram (by average linkage). Based on hierarchical cluster analysis genetic basis of the evolution of species of Gossypiunt is discussed.
