ISOLATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF ACINETOBACTER SP. FROM A MARINE SPONGE AXINELLA AGARICIFORIVIIS

A. VIMALA, A. SREE AND M. BAPUJI

Abstract

A halotolerant marine bacterial strain Acinetobacter sp. was isolated from the sponge Axinella agariciformis from Gopalpur coast of Orissa at a depth of 30 metres. The strain is a gram negative rod 3-5 x 1-21.tm in size. the strain showed optimum growth at pH 7-8 and thermal death point (TDP) at 90°C. The strain could grow at a salt concentration of 35% (w/v) indicating its halotolerant nature. The generation time of the species was found to be 60 min. The isolate was found positive for production of commercial envmes; amylase, protease and cellulase.
