AN INVESTIGATION ON REMOVAL OF CHROMIUM (VI) USING BACTERIAL STRAINS

M. VASANTHY

Abstract

A study was carried out to assess the metal (Chromium) removal efficiency of Bacillus sp., S5 and Pseztdomonas sp., S6 isolated from tannery effluent. The effect of initial metal concentration, time and nutrients on the maximum metal removal was found out. The optimum time for maximum metal removal (92.6%) was found to be 72 hrs at an initial metal concentration of 10 mg/1 with Pseudomonas sp., S6. The percentage removal has shown an further increase (95%) when the medium was supplemented with 0.2% glucose. Further the applicability of langmuir adsorption isotherm for metal removal was found out. The adsorption capacity (QO) was found to be 149.25 mg/g for Pseudomonas sp., S6.
