STUDY OF FOSSILS FROM THE TERTIARY CARBONATE SEDIMENTS OF SHELLA FORMATION (JAINT1A GROUP) EX- POSED AROUND SNAPUR- LUMPSNONG AREA, MEGHALAYA, INDIA

Abstract

The Tertiary carbonate sediments of the Sheila Formation were studied from the palaeontological point of view. The upper part of these sediments bears a good foramini feral fossil assemblage. .1'his assemblage indicates that the sed i n lents have shelf a flini tv..The presence oiliscocyclina and Miscellanea foraminifers indicates the tidal zone of sheld area of Palaeocence age. The middle pan contins NummuliLvs and Alvelina vhich are Ow charachistic genera of shelf region of the FOCCI1C sea. the upper part is characterised by the fossils like Nummulties, Alveolina, Discocyclina, Testularia, Qninoqueloculina etc, which indicate the Nliddle Ecocene age.
