S. SUDHA SRI KESAVAN AND M. MASILAMANI SELVAM

Abstract

Isolation and purification of antibiotic produced by marine Actinomycetes (Streptomyces cavourensis sp. SU 3 with accession number JF730121) was conducted. Production of antibiotic was carried out by liquid fermentation using ISP-2 medium for 6 days fermentation. The ethyl acetate solvent extract of selected isolate had biological activity to Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus pneumonia, Salmonella typhi, Aspergillus niger, and produced by extracellular secretion. Purification of antibiotic was carried out by silica gel 60 (Merck, 0.063-0.200 mm) column chromatography and preparative HPLC. The presence of active compound in the HPLC purified fractions were detected by UV spectrometry. Further studies are needed to elucidate the structure of the antibiotic.
