Abstract
The antibacterial activity of plant extract Coccinia grandis (Cucurbitaceae) was studied against five bacterial species such as Ivlicrococcus Sp, Bacillus sp, Citrobacter sp, Pseudomonas sp and Escherichia co/i. It was found that the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract (100 pg/mL) was shown maximum against E. Coli (19 mm) followed by Bacillus sp (14 mm), Citrobacter sp (11 mm), Micrococcus sp (9 mm) and Pseudomonas sp (7 mm). The other solvent (hexane and aqueous) extracts of C. grandis exhibited moderate antibacterial activity compared to ethanol extract. The efficiency of the ethanol extract was found to be almost similar compared to standard antibiotic such as tetracycline (20 pg/mL). The minimum inhibitory concentration of C. grandis ranged between 20 - 40 -pg/mL for test bacterial organisms.
