PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF CROTON BONPLANDIANLIM AERIAL PARTS

B. GANGA RAO AND T. RAGA SUDHA

Abstract

Ethyl acetate, chloroform and methanol extracts of Croton bonplandianum aerial parts was investigated for in-vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities by cup-plate method. The methanol extract was found to be more effective than the chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts. The results of the study indicate that the aerial parts have potential antimicrobial activity and are concentration dependent. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of secondary metabolites like steroids, triterpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins in the extracts.
