Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the adjuventicity of avian IL-2 administered in conjunction with NDV vaccination in chickens. Seventy, day-old commercial layer chicks were divided into three groups (A, B and C). The 30 chicks in each of group-A and group-B were vaccinated with F strain of Newcastle disease virus by the intraocular and intranasal routes at 7 days and 4 weeks of age, and also with K strain of NDV by the subcutaneous route at 9 weeks while group-C (10 chicks) remained as the unvaccinated control. The chicks in group-A (treatment group) were given interieukin-2 (IL-2) @2.5 pg/kg body weight per day by the intramuscular route on 4 consecutive days after each vaccination, while there in group-B remained as vaccinated controls. Blood samples were collected from each bird 6, 12 and 18 days after every vaccination. The humoral immune response, based on HI, SRI[) and SRH, showed was greater in group-A (treatment group) compared to groups B or C. The lymphocyte migration inhibition test (LMIT) was used to assess the cellular immunity. The group-A showed more inhibition of migration compared to groups B or C. The result indicated that IL-2 might be used as an immunornodulator for enhancing immunity against NDV.
