A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON BIODEGRADATION OF BENZENEHEXACHLORIDE(BHC) BY NONSTREPTOMYCESE ACTINOMYCETES

U. N. JADHAV AND A. M. DESHMUKH

Abstract

Microorganisms have ability to conform to a variety of environmental conditions. Therefore they are useful for various biotechnological applications. They are used for removal of pollutants from the environment, called bioremediation. Actinomycetes are best to remove pollutants. In first part of the study, nonstreptomycese actonomycetes were isolated from Vasantsagar dam situated in Sangli district of Maharashtra(India). Primary screening of all isolates for BHC degradation was carried out. All seven active isolates were used for degradation of BHC under different environmental conditions. It was found that optimum degradation of BHC (800 pg/mL) was at incubation temperature 30 °C, pH 8 and 1 gm% salinity by Nocardia sp., Nocardiopsis coeruleofuca, Micromonospora sp., Actinoplanes deccanensis, Actinomadura roseola, Streptosporangium sp. and Sreptoverticillium sp. More degradation was carried out when cellulose was used as a carbon source and yeast extract was used as a nitrogen source (1 gm%).
