V. NATHIYA AND R. ANURADHA

Abstract

The prime purpose of this study was to screen secondary metabolites i.e., phytochemical analysis and to evaluate the antibacterial activity of methanolic extracts of Coriandrum sativum Linn. against 11 bacterial isolates belonging to 2 different genera of gram negative and gram positive bacterial population isolated from urine specimen by employing disc diffusion method. The phytochemical analysis was done to screen flavonoids, phytosterols, tannins, phenolic compounds, carbohydrate, fixed oils and fats, glycosides, resins and lignin. The methanolic extract of leaves of Coriandrum sativum showed maximum activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Coriandrum sativum was observed to have an potent antibacterial activity and can be used for medicinal purposes. In the present study, it was noted that Coriandrum sativum has antibacterial activity and also there is presence of secondary metabolites in leaves of Coriandrum sativum.
