SPATIO-TEMPORAL VARIATIONS IN HYDROCHEMISTRY OF RIVER DAMODAR ALONG THE STRETCH OF DISHERGARH TO PALLAROAD, BURDWAN, WEST BENGAL, INDIA

Abstract

The present research work was carried out in order to identify the spatio-temporal variations in chemical constituents of Damodar river along the stretch of Dishergarh to Pallaroad Burdwan, West Bengal, India. From the study it revealed that the pH and EC ranges from 7.1 to 8.9, and 110 mS/cm to 710 mS/cm respectively. Major cations of Damodar river water ranges between 8.41 mg L 1 to 36.16 mg L1 (Ca2+), 2.77 mg L1 to 83.11 mg L(Mg2+), 4.28 mg L1 to 50.46 mg L1 (Na+), 1.2 mg L 1 to 36.5 mg L1 (K+) and 0.09 mg L1 to 1.41 mg L1 (Fe). The concentration of anions of the Damodar river water ranges between 1.25 mg L1 to 64 mg L1 (Cl-), 0.01 mg L1 to 1.32 mg L1 (PO4 3), 0.09 mg L1 to 1.41 mg L1 (F-), 0.05 mg L1 to 4.19 mg L1 (NO3 -). Scatter diagram shows that the weathering is the major controlling phenomena in controlling the hydrogeochemistry. The average ionic concentration is minimum during the monsoon season due to precipitation and surface runoff whereas maximum during the premonsoon season due to evaporation.
