Abstract

The performance of isolated designed consortia comprising Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, Cellulomonas species, Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus species, for the treatment of sewage waste water in terms of reduction in BOD, COD, TDS, chloride (Cl -) and sulphate (SO 4— ) was studied. Different parameters (agitation, and temperature) were optimized to achieve effective results in less incubation time. The results obtained indicated that consortium at 200 rpm and 35°C is capable of effectively reducing the pollution load of the sewage waste water, in terms of BOD, COD, TDS, Cl -and SO 4-within the desired discharge limits. The use of such specific consortia can overcome the inefficiencies and proves that these indigenous bacteria are potential candidates for sewage treatment plants.
