PHYSICO-CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF SELECTED GROUND WATER SAMPLES IN TEHSIL AKHNOOR, DISTRICT JAMMU, J&K, INDIA

PRAGYA KHANNA

Abstract

The present study aims to assess the physico-chemical parameters (pH, Electrical conductivity (EC), Carbonates (CO3), Bicarbonates (HCO 3), Chlorides (Cl), Sulphates (SO 4), Nitrates (NO 3 ), Fluoride (F), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Sodium (Na), Potassium (K), Iron (Fe), Total hardness (TH)) of the underground water in Tehsil Akhnoor, District Jammu, J&K, India. The water samples were collected from shallow aquifer based hand pumps and dug wells in 17 chosen sites during the premonsoon period (Mar. 2013 to May 2013). The results were compared with standard values of drinking water prescribed by BIS and WHO. It was observed that certain parameters like electrical conductivity, bicarbonate, total hardness, calcium and iron as determined from the groundwater samples were above the limits at certain places. The statistical parameters like Mean, Standard deviation, coefficient of variation, correlation coefficient were systematically calculated for each parameter. Also, Single factor Anova Tables and Piper Diagram were prepared to signify the major results.
