EFFECT OF CADMIUM CHLORIDE ON THE TESTIS OF FRESHWATER PRAWN, MACROBRACHIUM KISTNENSIS

P.B. BRAHMAPURIKAR AND R. NAGABHSUAHAN

Abstract

The freshwater prawn M. kistnensis was exposed to lethal and sublethal concentration of cadmium chloride. The changes noticed in the testis after acute exposure of 24 and 96 hours were compact arrangement of tubules and some abnormality in spermatophore formation and disruption of prolifertating zone of testicular tubules. Also shrinkage of semniferous tubules, deformities in shape, formation of empty spaces, damage of interstitial cells. On exposure to chronic concentration of 7 and 21 days seminiferous tubules, spermetogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids were reduced in size. Also damage to testis such as degeneration and distingeration of tubules was noticed.
