SWELLING BEHAVIOR OF SOIL - FLY ASH / GGBFS MIXTURES

K. SIVA RAMA KRISHNA AND R. RAMA RAO

Abstract

The expansive soil poses lot of problems when the structures are constructed in these soils. The swelling and shrinkage behavior of the expansive soils is the root cause for the aforesaid problems when these soils are in compacted state particularly at dry side of the optimum. The BC soil is chosen as expansive soil and is mixed with GGBFS, NFA and VFA at various proportions ranging from 0% to 100% at 10% interval to explore the possibilities of reducing its swelling pressure and swell potential by curing the samples at 0 , 7 and 28 days. The test results indicate that the reduction in the swelling pressure and swell potential of BC soil is more with GGBFS/NFA compared to VFA.The cured conditions have more pronounced effect in controlling the swelling behaviour of the BC soil
