Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the effect of ZnSO4 on test species, Spirulina platensis – a fresh water micro algae and how the toxic effect can be reduced by the addition of iron (FeCl3). Phytoremediation is a promising alternative which utilizes active biomass or dead biomas to bind and concentrate heavy metal from the aqueous solution. Different types of biomaterials have different levels of metal uptake. The most promising biomaterial studied is algal biomass. The effect of metal on the biomass, growth rate and mechanism of metal tolerance, there by suggesting the importance of this algae in bioremediation and environmental clean up operation.
