Abstract
An increasing amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) and its consequent problems of disposal have become major environmental issues in urban areas. Solid waste is being produced since the beginning of civilization. During the early period, solid wastes were conveniently disposed off, as the density of population was low with large open space but now a days density of population is high with less open space. Uncontrolled and unscientific disposal of solid waste contaminate soil, water and air. The study of soil characteristics was undertaken to assess the quality of soil due to solid waste dumped at Vellalore dump yard. Samples collected from Closure, composting yard & around the dump yard were analyzed for the following parameters like pH, EC, Mg, Na, K, Ca, organic matter, moisture content & Sodium Absorption Ratio.
