Abstract
Water hyacinth is a fast growing aquatic macrophyte, which causes environmental problems such as water eutrophication, obstruction of fishing and navigation, hence focus has been put to carry out research for solving the maintenance and handling issue of water hyacinth. The present study evaluates water hyacinth as novel renewable resource and promising lignocellulosic feed stock for bioethanol production. Pretreatment was carried out with an optimum concentration of 2% v/v dilute H2SO4 and the residue obtained after the pretreatment was further saccharified by enzyme Accelerase 1500. The total reducing sugar achieved by enzyme hydrolysis was found to be 34±13.8g/l, which is subjected for ethanol fermentation with S.cerevisiae VS3. The Ethanol concentration was found to be 14±0.02g/l-1 at 36 h, with an yield of (0.411±0.031 g/g), productivity of 0.39±0.01g/l/h and fermentation efficiency of 80±0.22%.
