EVALUATION OF MULBERRY (MORUS INDICA L.) PROVENANCES OF HIMACHAL PRADESH UNDER NURSERY CONDITIONS

Abstract

The rooting behaviour response of four provenances of Morus indica under the effect of growth regulator (IBA) was studied in a factorial RBD experiment. The collection was made from Solan (Nauni), Hamirpur, Sirmor (Dhaula Kuan) and Kangra (Jachh) districts of H.P. The growth parameters studied were: Sprouting, rooting, survival and plant height under nursery stage. Significant variations in almost all parameters were recorded among the different IBA formulations, provenances and diameter classes. The treatment with IBA 0.6% performed the best for all the rooting behaviour parameters studied. The provenance Hamirpur (P4) showed overall best rooting response with 80.91% sprouting and 70.18% survival per cent. However, provenance Nauni (P1) gave the maximum rooting 74.07% and maximum plant height (121.00 cm). Diameter class D3 (Cuttings having diameter greater than 1.25 cm) exhibited significantly better performance in respect of rooting behaviour. Proximate principles estimation was carried out in four provenances. Nauni and Dhaulakuan provenances exhibited better values for most of the proximate principles.
