A WAY TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY BY UTILIZING COPPER SLAG IN CONCRETE

R. Rathan Raj and E.B. Perumal Pillai

Abstract

Copper slag which is a by- product of the manufacture of copper is one of the promising industrial byproducts. It can be used in the construction industry as a partial substitute of either cement or aggregates. This slag is currently being used for many purposes ranging from land- filling to grit blasting, which are not very value added applications. These applications are utilizing only about 15% to 20% of the copper slag generated and the remaining material is dumped as a waste, which requires large areas of land. The aim of this investigation is to study the strength and performance of concrete containing copper slag as partial replacement of sand, as opposed to that of normal concrete. For this research work, M25 grade concrete is used and the test is conducted for various proportions of copper slag replacement of sand by 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.
