Abstract
Antibacterial activities of the crude extracts of Spirulina plantensis, Phycocyanin extracts and Chitosan were studied against Multi Drug Resistant Strains by the agar-well diffusion method. The Spirulina powder was treated with different polar solvents by using various extraction methods such as Soxhlet, Homogenized and Sequential extraction. Phycocyanin, a major photosynthetic pigment that was found in Spirulina was extracted by three methods such as Inorganic acid extraction, Buffer extraction and Ultrasonic treatment. The ability of Phycocyanin to scavenge hydrogen peroxide and its reducing power were determined by antioxidant assay methods. Chitosan, a biopolymer with antimicrobial properties was combined with the crude extracts and Phycocyanin from Spirulina and to study the combined activity on Multi Drug Resistant strains. The results showed that Methanol extracts of combined Spirulina plantensis, Phycocyanin and Chitosan exhibited maximum antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
