Abstract

The experiment involving twelve varieties was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications at the Research Block of Vegetable Section in Sector No.1, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot (Karnataka) during Rabi season of 2012 to evaluate these varieties for growth, earliness and pod quality characters. Among the varieties studied, Best of All was better with respect to earliness and pod quality characters like days to first flowering, days to 50 per cent flowering and days to first pod picking as well as pod quality characters like pod colour (light to dark green), pod shape (elliptic and round), pod curvature (slightly to highly curved) and stringlessness. Next best performing varieties were Arka Bold and Contender with respect to earliness. The present study indicates existence of a wide range of variability for earliness characters, namely, days to first flowering, days to 50 per cent flowering and days to first pod picking.
