Abstract
This present study was carried out to determine the phytochemical composition, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Manggong bamboo leaf extracts. Research was conducted in July 2013 to May 2014. Paper disc method was used to test antimicrobials activity against Hyphopichia burtonii, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Alternaria alternata, E. coli, B. subtilis and B. cereus. Antioxidant activity was measured in vitro for DDPH radical scavenging activity with ascorbic acid as control. In vivo study was done with completely randomized design with two factors which is physical activity and extract of manggong. Treatment was given in 4 combinations with 6 repetitions. Treatment given were swimming, extract, combination of both and the absent of both. Sample used was male Wistar Rat. Willsâ method was used for measuring malondialdehyde and catalase. Data were analyzed with parametric statistics 2-way ANOVA test (a = 0.05). The result of phytochemical screening revealed the presence of some secondary metabolites in bamboo manggong leaf extract including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and triterpenoids. Antimicrobial testing resulted in clear zone against E. coli (d:0,68 - 1,73 mm), B. subtilis (d:0,24 - 1,92 mm), and B. cereus (d: 0,13 - 0,96 mm). DPPH radical scavenging activity of manggong leaf extract (91,96%) was almost as good as ascorbic acid (97,56%). Based on the results of statistical tests indicate that swimming and extract given and also interaction of both treatmens has influence on malondialdehyde level (p<0.05),where as both treatment didnât affect catalase activity of treated animal (p>0.005). It can be concluded that manggong bamboo leaf extract has flavonoid, alcaloid, triterpenoid and saponin composition and antimicrobial activity against E.coli, B. cereus and B. Subtilis. Moreover it also has noticeable antioxidant activity.
