ESTABLISHMENT OF CORRELATION FACTOR BETWEEN TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS AND ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY FOR GROUNDWATER QUALITY ANALYSIS

Abstract

Now a day people know the approximate quality of drinking water through the measurement of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in water. As per standard procedure TDS in water sample is measured by gravimetric method which is a time consuming method and takes twelve to twenty four hours for TDS measurement. On the other hand Electrical Conductivity (EC) is directly proportional to the amount of salt dissolved in the water. So, we can easily use the value of EC for the determination of TDS in water instead of gravimetric method for saving the time. From mentioned concept we collect 100 water samples of various talukas of Gujarat state and established a correlation factor between EC and TDS. Present study suggests that the approximate value of TDS (mg/L) can be calculated from the EC (μS/cm) using the equation, TDS=0.52×EC.
