VARIATION OF FLUORIDE CONCENTRATION IN AQUIFERS OF DIFFERENT DEPTHS: POSSIBLE GEOLOGIC REASONS

Abstract

Fluoride contamination in ground water has been reported globally, particularly its impact on human health. In order to that present study was conducted in the area of Unnao district U.P. to understand probable variation of fluoride (F) concentration in shallow and deep aquifers. 40 (forty) samples, 20 each from shallow and deep aquifers were collected for F estimation during July 2010, the average depth for shallow and deep aquifers were 30-60 ft and 65-140 ft, In shallow and deep aquifers the mean F concentration were found 2.8 mg/L and 1.6 mg/L respectively, indicates shallow aquifers are having higher concentration of F than deep aquifers. Presence of F bearing mineral in the host rock and their interaction with water can be considered the main cause for variation in the F concentration in these two aquifers. The most possible factors for variation and escalation of F concentration between two aquifers are discussed in details.
