THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF WOOD APPLE ON HYPERTENSION AND DIABETES

Abstract

The wood apple (Limonia acidissima L) is native and common in India, Sri Lanka, China and Indonesia, where it is cultivated along roads and edges of fields and occasionally in orchards. Effect of wood apple juice on diabetic subjects with hypertension was studied. Majority (66.6%) of the subjects were in the age group of 50-60 years followed by 30-40 years (33.34%). Significant reduction of fasting blood sugar level and post prandial blood sugar level after consumption of wood apple juice for a period 90 days as compare to initial. whereas there is a significant reduction of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The mean haemoglobin level was increased significantly increased from 13.24g/dl to 13.96g/dl Wood apple have fruit can be considered as an important source of phenolic compounds, which exhibit their antioxidant activity which have therapeutic value in reducing blood sugar level, serum creatinine level, blood pressure and increase hemoglobin.
