UPTAKE OF METAL IONS BY MARSILEA QUADRIFOLIA L.

PUNITA S. PARIKH AND SOMA K. MAZUMDER

Abstract

The present study was aimed to determine the metal ions uptake capacity of Marsilea quadrifolia L. from the wastewater of oil and petroleum refining indudtry, thereby determining its bioconcentration factor. The plant material was grown in the pure wastewater for 7days in the green house in tripticate. Among the metal ions present in the wastewater percentage absorption was in the order Cu>HCr>Cr> Cd >Pb> Ni > Zn > F. Bioconcentration factor was found to be less than one for all the metal ions which indicated that it is not the suitable material for phytoremediation of the wastewater. Strong positive correlations obtained between the metal ions in water and in the plant tissue indicated the potential of M. quadrifolia L. for pollution monitoring of these metal ions.
