Abstract

Bacillus cereus TSS1, isolated from textile industry was found to decolorize 90 % of reactive dye at the concentration of 500 mg/L in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth. The optimal pH and temperature for the dye decolorization were found to be 7 and 37°C respectively. The shaking at 75 rpm and 100 rpm was found to inhibit the dye degradation compared to static condition. From the studies of live versus killed cell and UVVis spectrum, it was found that, the mode of decolorization by the isolated strain was degradation rather than adsorption. The oxidative and reductive enzymes like laccase, azo reductase and magnesium peroxidase were induced during the dye degradation period and the isolated strain was found to decolorize the structurally diverse group of dyes. These results suggest the potential use of Bacillus cereus TSS1 towards the treatment of textile effluent.
