IS YOUR BUILDING, WHICH IS DESIGNED ACCORDING TO “ECOLOGICAL ARCHITECTURE”, REALLY ECOLOGICAL?

Hacer Mutlu Danaci and Kemal Reha Kavas

Abstract

Today architecture is moving in the direction of designing comfortable spaces for people and adopting ecological design processes in doing so. Architecture has always benefited from technology. However it would be wrong to perceive ecological structures as smart, green buildings strengthened with technology. Although the relation between technology and architecture is inevitable, there are several principles that make it possible to develop designs in which the design process is fundamentally independent from technological developments, timeless and more affordable. For example, adequate utilisation of daylight is a very important criterion that should be considered from the very beginning of the design process. This study has two aims. Firstly, to create awareness about ecological friendliness in scope of “ecological structure” beginning from the design stage, and secondly, to offer a critical perspective as to whether”ecological” structures are really ecological.
