EFFECTIVE WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT USING GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) – A REVIEW

Saravanakumar J. and Deenadhayalanj

Abstract

One of the main concerns of our water based resources for the future is the sustainability of the present and future water resource allocation. As water becomes scarce, the importance of how it is to be administered grows vastly. Finding a balance between what is needed by human beings and what is needed for the environment is an important step in the sustainability of water resource management. On that, we focus on the optimal use of water resources which can be achieved through groundwater and other resource allocation and can have a balanced management of water across the nationÂ’s social, economic development and environmental needs. It led us to use advanced technologies in the water resource management. Geographic information science is an effective tool to help in solving the water resource problems in the present as well as futures which has been identified in this study. Also the various combinations of geographic information systems and simulation models were discussed to advance the knowledge of water resource assessment and management.
