Abstract
An experiment was conducted to standardize the propagation of chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) through grafting under open field conditions of Srinagar (J&K). Two different methods of grafting (cleft and tongue) performed at 3 different timings (2nd and 4th week of March and 2nd week of April) were replicated four times in RCBD design. Among the grafting methods, cleft grafting was found significantly superior over the tongue grafting, with grafting success of (47.50%), sprouting (60.83%), shoot length (23.34 cm), shoot diameter (11.50 mm), leaf area (27.45 cm2), leaf number per plant (26.58), while 2nd week of March recorded significantly higher grafting success (55.00%), sprouting (66.20%), shoot length (24.58 cm), shoot diameter (12.59mm), leaf area (33.02 cm2), leaf number per plant (27.68) over other timings.
