STIMULATION OF GROWTH, BIOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND GYMNEMIC ACID CONTENT OF GYMNEMA SYLVESTRE (RETZ.) SCHULT. BY CYANOBACTERIALAPPLICATION AS BIOFERTILIZER

PRADIPA KUMAR DAS AND SAILABALA PADHI

Abstract

The biofertilizer effect of the aqueous extract of four cyanobacteria viz:Anabaena circinalis (H), Scytonema coactail (H), Lyngbya mucicola (NH)and Oscillatoria princeps (NH) on the growth dynamics, pigments, protein, carbohydrate, lipid and gymnemic acid content of a potent antidiabetic plant Gymnema sylvestre (Gurmar) was investigated. All the employedcyanobacterial extracts (1%,5%,&10%) were found to be stimulatory for shoot length; chlorophyll content, carbohydrate, protein, lipid and gymnemic acid content of leaf. 10% extract of Anabaena circinalis exhibited maximum stimulating effect on Gymnema sylvestre.
